Rays place Jerry Sands on DL with wrist injury, promote Cole Figueroa
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays announced late Monday that outfielder Jerry Sands will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained tendon in his left wrist.
Infielder Cole Figueroa will be recalled from Triple-A Durham to take Sands' place on the roster.
Sands, who had his left arm in a splint Monday at Tropicana Field, has hit .190 with one home run and four RBI in 12 games this season since he was promoted from Durham on June 1. His wrist will be immobilized for three weeks, and re-evaluation will occur afterward.
Rays manager Joe Maddon said Sands' injury was noticeable after the player's final swing in the bottom of the sixth inning on a 0-for-3 hitting day in a victory over the Houston Astros on Sunday at Tropicana Field. Kevin Kiermaier pinch-hit for Sands in the eighth.
"I didn't know at that time," Maddon said. "I had no idea what it would be. Then after the game, Ronnie (head athletic trainer Ron Porterfield) indicated that it could be exactly what it is."
Figueroa, meanwhile, has hit .250 with one RBI in seven games with the Rays this season, all from May 16-26. He has hit .300 with three home runs and 29 RBI in 54 games with Durham this year.
