ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays have tweaked their roster before starting the regular season’s final week.
Reliever Jeff Beliveau was recalled from Triple-A Durham on Saturday before the Rays’ 5-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles at Tropicana Field. It marked his fourth stint with the team this season, but he has yet to appear in a game.
"You take it in stride," Beliveau said Saturday. "Whatever team you're on, you just try to pitch good and play good for them."
Meanwhile, Rays traded minor league pitcher Frank De Los Santos to the Chicago White Sox for cash or a player to be named later. Tampa Bay acquired Jesse Crain in a trade with Chicago on July 29, but the De Los Santos trade is unrelated. De Los Santos, 25, was 1-2 with two saves and a 5.34 ERA in 26 games for Triple-A Durham.
In addition, left-handed pitching prospect Enny Romero will be recalled from Triple-A Durham before Sunday’s game against the Orioles and make his major-league debut that afternoon.
Romero, 22, went 11-7 with a 2.76 ERA in 27 appearances for Double-A Montgomery and had one regular-season start for Durham on Sept. 2, when he threw eight scoreless innings and allowed four hits at Norfolk. He has a 3.37 ERA in six seasons in the minors.
On Sunday, the Rays selected the contract of right-hander J.D. Martin from Triple-A Durham to be available in the bullpen. Martin, 30, was 16-4 with a 2.75 ERA in 27 starts with the Bulls this season. He is a former No. 35 overall pick by the Cleveland Indians in 2001.
