Rangers vs. Yankees breakdown

What went right
• The Rangers had plenty of offense in the three-game set, scoring a total of 30 runs in the series including a season high 15 in Saturday’s 15-4 romp. The 10-run third inning Saturday was the biggest inning the Rangers have had since 2013. That, combined with a seven-run inning Friday marked the first time since 2008 the Rangers had consecutive games with at least seven runs scored. The offense helped the Rangers sweep their first series in New York since 2003.
• The starting trio wasn’t perfect for the Rangers but all three did enough to pick up wins, making it five-consecutive wins for the starting rotation. The hot pitching by the rotation gives Texas the fifth-best rotation ERA in the American League. And Nick Martinez was the best of the three, allowing two runs in Saturday’s 15-4 win to improve to 4-0 on the season.
• It’s difficult to single out one player when the offense is going so good but Prince Fielder’s play makes it impossible not to notice. Fielder tore through the Yankees by collecting nine RBI in the series and also smashed three homers.
What went wrong
• The signs of progress made by the bullpen in the series against Boston weren’t evident in the New York series. The relievers nearly gave up the game in Friday’s 10-9 win and the bullpen was charged with two runs Saturday, putting the series total at six runs allowed. It was better though Sunday as it worked three scoreless.
• Shortstop Elvis Andrus continues to be consistent in the error department, as he booted another routine ball Sunday to give him 10 this year. That’s tied for the second most in the American League. The only player in the AL with more is Oakland’s Marcus Semien, who now has his own personal defensive coach in former Rangers manager Ron Washington.
What’s next
The Rangers will head to Cleveland and an already-hot offense will get some added pop with the 2015 debut of Josh Hamilton. The Rangers will have to tweak their lineup with Hamilton, which will lead to less playing time for Delino DeShields Jr. and Leonys Martin. But Hamilton, who hit the ball well in rehab time for Frisco and Round Rock, is worth a little less playing time for either of the outfielders.
