The Texas Rangers rotation isn't completely set but it's at least taking shape.
Manager Jeff Banister announced Thursday that right-hander Yovani Gallardo would start the season opener April 6 at Oakland. Banister also said that Ross Detwiler had secured a spot in the Texas rotation.
Both pitchers were acquired in the offseason in separate trades and join left-hander Derek Holland right-hander Colby Lewis as rotation locks.
Gallardo will be the seventh different Opening Day starter in the last six seasons for Texas. The last pitcher to make consecutive Opening Day starts for the Rangers was Kevin Millwood, who got the nod four-consecutive seasons from 2006 through 2009.
Getting the Opening Day nod is nothing new for Gallardo. He started for Milwaukee in the season opener the last five years, including six scoreless innings last year against Atlanta.
Detwiler came to camp vying for the No. 5 rotation spot but that changed when right-hander Yu Darvish was lost for the season because of Tommy John surgery. He's been solid this spring, posting a 4.15 ERA in three appearances.
He hasn't started a regular-season game in the majors since July 3, 2013 when he was with Washington.
Texas still hasn't settled on a fifth starter. Nick Martinez has been the most effective pitcher vying for that job, with a 1.93 ERA in two 'A' game appearances. His biggest competition is coming from Nick Tepesch, who pitched better in his last start but still has a Cactus League ERA of 8.56.
