The Texas Rangers sent left-handed reliever Joseph Ortiz to Triple A Round Rock Wednesday to make room for starter Alexi Ogando.

Ortiz allowed six runs in Tuesday’s 17-5 thumping at the hands of Boston. The rookie is 2-1 with a 5.13 ERA in 20 appearances with the Rangers. He started the season strong but has an 8.59 ERA over his last 13 appearances.

Ogando went on the disabled list May 16 with right biceps tendinitis. He’s 4-2 with a 3.08 ERA with the Rangers this year. He pitched six innings in a rehab start for Frisco last week.

Sending Ortiz down meant the Rangers didn’t have to make a move with another struggling left-hander in Michael Kirkman. Kirkman, who has a 6.95 ERA, is out of options.
