ARLINGTON, Texas – Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said his preference would be to get a new contract for manager Ron Washington done this offseason.
Washington is entering the final year of his contract and while there have been no talks about an extension past the 2014 season, they appear likely.
Daniels said he'd prefer to not talk publicly about contract discussions, but defended the manager with the most wins in franchise history.
"I think it's easy to sit back and pick it apart," Daniels said. "Wash has a hard job. It is a hard job. These decisions happen quick. He already said, 'Do we make mistakes? We all do.' He has a hard job, and I think he's pretty good at it."
Daniels said he hasn't spoken with the ownership group yet about a new deal for Washington.
"I've been as supportive as anybody and we're going to handle that behind the scenes," Daniels said. "Wash and I haven't talked about it yet. I haven't talked to ownership about it yet. We will have that conversation internally."
Wednesday the Rangers shook up the coaching staff by getting rid of first-base coach Dave Anderson and bench coach Jackie Moore.
