ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers officially acquired catcher Geovany Soto from the Chicago Cubs Tuesday.

The Rangers are getting Soto and cash for the Cubs for minor-league pitcher Jacob Brigham and a player to be named later or cash.

Texas has designated catcher Yorvit Torrealba for assignment to clear the way for playing time for Soto, who will be in uniform for Tuesday night's game against Los Angeles.

"We're excited to add Geovany to our club," Texas general manager Jon Daniels said in a statement. "He's a talented guy we think can contribute to what we're hoping to accomplish. We also want to thank Yorvit for his work here over the past two seasons."

Torrealba hit .236 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 49 games for Texas this season.
