Rangers' Gallo has surgery on ankle

Joey Gallo, the top hitting prospect in the Texas organization, had surgery Friday morning to remove the Os Trigonum bone in his left ankle and will start the minor-league season in the disabled list.

Gallo started having problems with the ankle last week while the club was in Surprise, Ariz., and didn't play in the prospects games against the Chicago Cubs.

Dr. John Crates performed the surgery. Crates did the exact same surgery on Geovany Soto last spring and the Rangers are using that as the timeline for Gallo's recovery.

Soto missed 16 days last spring before returning to game action.

Gallo hit .250 for the Rangers this spring with two home runs and six RBI.
