Quick Hits: V-Mart out; Lobstein to pitch Tuesday

DETROIT -- Early News: Victor Martinez is out of the lineup, even after not starting the three games in Pittsburgh, because of lingering knee issues.

Tom Gage: Is that a matter of concern?

Dana Wakiji: Because Martinez had the surgery so late in the offseason, it might be something that bothers him all season.

Rajai Davis said the Tigers can pick up for Martinez while he's out so it's not a huge concern.

Brad Ausmus said Martinez will be back in the lineup Saturday.

TG: So Ausmus didn't say anything before the game about Justin Verlander -- but I think we all know he will miss another start, don't we?

DW -- Ausmus did confirm that Kyle Lobstein will start Tuesday against the New York Yankees.

He said Verlander reported normal soreness after throwing yesterday but he hadn't spoken to him today.

So no decision has been made yet on Verlander's next step, whether it's another simulated game or a rehab start.

TG -- And yet the Tigers go into this game 8-1. What part of their game do you credit more for that start -- the offense or the pitching?

DW -- With a league-low 1.91 ERA, I'll go with pitching, although I think the improved defense has contributed to that as well.

However, the .312 team batting average, second only to Kansas City's .316 isn't too shabby either.
