MINNEAPOLIS — Richard Pitino's first staff at the University of Minnesota is complete.
The Gophers announced Friday that Pitino has added Dan McHale to his bench as an assistant coach. McHale will join fellow assistants Kimani Young and Ben Johnson on Pitino's staff.
"I have known Dan for a long time and know that he will be a great addition to our staff," Pitino said in a statement. "He fits what we already have in place here with Kimani and Ben, which is a love and passion for the game of basketball. I am looking forward to working with this staff as we build a competitive Big Ten program."
McHale spent the last three years working as an assistant coach under Kevin Willard at Seton Hall. Prior to that, McHale was on Willard's staff at Iona College. At Seton Hall, McHale was responsible for opponent scouting and defensive game planning. He also worked at Louisville under Richard Pitino's father, Rick, as both a video coordinator and a staff assistant.
"It is an exciting time for Gopher fans, and I am really looking forward to getting to know everyone in the community and learning more about the great tradition that Minnesota basketball has had and will continue to have," McHale said in a statement.
