Miami Marlins pitcher Juan Oviedo and Cleveland Indians pitcher Roberto Hernandez are expected to be suspended for up to six weeks of regular-season play because they had been using false identities while playing in the Major Leagues, multiple media outlets reported Monday.
Oviedo, who had been known as Leo Nunez, and Hernandez, who went by the name of Fausto Carmona, are expected to receive their visas and return to the United States to continue their Major League careers.
But Major League Baseball and the U.S. State Department are negotiating a deal for their return, and that deal will include a suspension.
Both are still in the Dominican Republic, but once their visa issues are worked out and they are allowed to return, they are expected to participate in an extended spring training at their teams' respective spring training sites.
In the meantime, Oviedo and Hernandez are performing community service work in the Dominican Republic, which includes instructing prospects not to use false identities.
Ovideo went 1-4 with a 4.06 earned run average as a reliever for the Marlins last season, while Hernandez went 7-15 with a 5.25 ERA as a starting pitcher for the Indians in 2011.
