By Ross Jones, FOXSports.com Following three weeks in which controversial calls have affected NFL play, former vice president of officiating Mike Pereira wonders if the rulebook is becoming too thick. “The question has to become, has this manifesto become a little bit too big and too confusing?” Pereira said on FOX Football Daily Monday. “For the third time now in three weeks, we have the officials mis-enforcing a penalty.” Pereira says that officials not knowing the rules is a “big deal” and he notes three examples in which this occurred. Officials missed a call by not enforcing offsetting penalties after Clay Matthews shoved Colin Kaepernick out of bounds in Week 1. This week, Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier threw a challenge flag for a play which was being automatically reviewed. The Vikings were given a 15-yard penalty opposed to just charging them a timeout, which would’ve been the proper ruling. Would the NFL be opposed to getting rid of some rules to better streamline the process? It could be worth some consideration. Questions? Comments?
