Pat Murphy hired to manage Tucson Padres

Former Arizona State baseball coach Pat Murphy has been named manager of the Tucson Padres, San Diego's Triple-A Pacific Coast League affiliate.
Murphy managed the Padres' short-season affiliate in Eugene, Ore., for the 2011 and 2012 season, after joining the Padres as a special assistant to baseball operations in 2012.
He was head coach at ASU for 15 seasons, compiling a 629-284-1 record. He was a four-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year and took the Sun Devils to the College World Series four times, including a second-place finish in 1998 third-place finishes in 2005 and 2009. He was forced to resign in November 2009 while the school was under NCAA investigation for charges that ultimately led to the three years probation and a one year postseason ban due to "lack of institutional control" -- although Murphy was not personally sanctioned for NCAA violations.
"Tucson is a great city and I've always enjoyed going there," Murphy told the Padres official web site. "I am excited for next season and the challenge of managing in Triple-A."
