The Florida Panthers have recalled defenseman Shane O'Brien from San Antonio (AHL), the team announced Wednesday.

O'Brien, 31, has appeared in 19 games with San Antonio this year, recording five goals and eight assists.

An eight-year NHL veteran, O'Brien has notched 13 goals, 78 assists and 911 penalty minutes in 528 career NHL games split between Calgary, Colorado, Nashville, Vancouver, Tampa Bay and Anaheim. Additionally, he has also played in 40 post-season games, registering two goals and three assists.

Initially joining Florida during training camp on a professional try out, the Panthers signed O'Brien to a one-year, two-way contract on Oct. 6.

With rookie defenseman Aaron Ekblad absent from Thursday's practice for undisclosed reasons, it is possible that O'Brien may make his regular-season debut when the Panthers visit the Detroit Red Wings on Friday.
