GREEN BAY, Wis. -- There will not be 90 healthy players ready to go when the Green Bay Packers begin training camp Thursday morning.
Coach Mike McCarthy revealed Wednesday that tight end Andrew Quarless (torn right ACL, MCL) and offensive tackle Derek Sherrod (broken right leg) are still recoverying and did not pass their pre-training camp physicals after suffering injuries last season.
"I actually had a chance to see (Sherrod) Friday," McCarthy said of the team's 2011 first-round pick. "Rehab and football is really two different things. So I can't tell you exactly how far he is away. But he's been here every day, he's making progress. I'd say the last couple weeks he's been really coming on strong.
"He had a setback back in the spring, but he's getting better. The trainers are very confident in the progress that he's making."
Pro Bowl fullback John Kuhn, who was carted off the field midway through the Packers' playoff loss to the New York Giants with a knee injury, is also unlikely to be ready.
"I don't think John's going to make it here for today," McCarthy said. "And we've got a couple of other guys we're looking at."
Safety Charlie Peprah had his knee scoped and cleaned out after last season and sat out during offseason workouts and minicamp. But McCarthy wasn't sure about his status for training camp.
"Charlie is actually one of the individuals I'm waiting for more information on," McCarthy said. "He's currently going through his physical."
The injury development that appears most positive is that of running back Alex Green, who suffered a torn ACL in Week 7 of last season. The team is hoping Green can share carries with starter James Starks.
"Alex is close," McCarthy said. "I actually had a chance to watch Alex work out last week down at the Hutson Center. I think Alex is very close. We'll probably have that information for you tomorrow.
"We have the conditional tests (later today), so hopefully nothing comes out of that. We've had things come out of that in the past, too."
Other players who did not participate in minicamp due to injury include rookie defensive lineman Mike Daniels and linebacker Frank Zombo, but the status for those two remains unknown.
