GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Green Bay Packers fans will be chanting "Kuuuuuhn" at Lambeau Field for at least one more season.
John Kuhn, the Packers' popular fullback who has been with the franchise since 2007, re-signed with Green Bay on Thursday to a one-year deal worth just over $1 million.
Kuhn’s agent, Kevin Gold, told FOXSportsWisconsin.com that several other teams showed interest in his client this offseason. Gold added that Kuhn could’ve gotten more money from other teams in free agency. However, the rest of the NFL began to realize that Kuhn’s desire was to stay with the Packers. Kuhn lives in Green Bay year-round.
At 31 years old, Kuhn will once again be one of the oldest players on the Packers' roster -- and one of only a few who are older than 30. But, throughout his seven seasons in Green Bay, especially in recent years, Kuhn has proved his value to the Packers by having a great understanding for coach Mike McCarthy's offense and being a very good blocker. Never was that more evident than on Green Bay's game-winning (and division-clinching) touchdown pass in Week 17 against the Chicago Bears when Kuhn interrupted the pass rush of Julius Peppers (who is now his teammate) to give Aaron Rodgers enough time to launch the long throw to Randall Cobb.
Kuhn only rushed the ball 10 times during the 2013 season, his fewest carries since 2009. In his career, Kuhn has 165 rushing attempts for 506 yards (3.1 average) and 12 touchdowns, plus 72 receptions for 493 yards and eight touchdowns.
Kuhn was one of Green Bay's 17 unrestricted free agents this offseason, and he is the sixth player on that lengthy list to agree to a new contract with the Packers. Green Bay has also re-signed cornerback Sam Shields, nose tackle B.J. Raji, outside linebacker Mike Neal, tight end Andrew Quarless and running back James Starks. Chris Banjo, who was an exclusive-rights free agent, re-signed with the Packers, too.
Four of those 17 unrestricted free agents have signed with other teams, with James Jones and C.J. Wilson going to the Oakland Raiders, Evan Dietrich-Smith heading to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Marshall Newhouse signing with the Cincinnati Bengals. M.D. Jennings signed with the Chicago Bears after Green Bay decided not to give him a restricted free-agent tender offer.
The remaining free agents that the Packers have to make a decision on are tight end Jermichael Finley, quarterbacks Matt Flynn and Seneca Wallace, defensive linemen Johnny Jolly and Ryan Pickett and inside linebacker Robert Francois.
