Packers expect Cobb, Nelson to play vs. 49ers
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Randall Cobb has the flu and Jordy Nelson has an ankle injury, but the Green Bay Packers are about as healthy as a team can be at this point in the season. Even those two wide receivers will be well enough for Saturday night's divisional round playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers.
"I feel pretty confident the receiver position will be healthy for the game," coach Mike McCarthy said Thursday. "Our doctors feel confident everybody will be ready for the game."
Cobb, the Packers' leading receiver this season, was sent home from practice Wednesday with his illness but returned to the team Thursday and went through limited work in practice.
"Randall Cobb's still under the weather," McCarthy said. "He's going to go. I don't have any questions about that. I think it was important for Randall to get out there and practice. Randall took the reps that we had set up for him, and I think by game time, he'll be fine."
Nelson did not practice Wednesday but was able to participate on a limited basis Thursday.
"I thought he looked pretty good," McCarthy said of Nelson.
For the first time since Week 4, quarterback Aaron Rodgers had all of his top wide receivers on the field for Saturday's postseason win over the Minnesota Vikings. From Greg Jennings' groin injury that later required abdominal surgery to Nelson's recurring hamstring injury and minor setbacks for other receivers, Rodgers played the vast majority of the season with at least one of his playmakers sidelined.
Tight end Jermichael Finley is on the injury report with a hamstring injury but has practiced fully all week, as have running backs Alex Green (knee) and James Starks (knee).
There is no question that outside linebacker Clay Matthews will play Saturday, but Green Bay's best pass rusher is battling through a knee injury.
The bigger injury question heading into the game is on San Francisco's end, where defensive lineman Justin Smith — who Rodgers called "one of the top defensive players in the league" — is working through elbow and tricep injuries that kept him out of the 49ers' final two regular-season games.
