Operation shutdown: Padres' Ross done for season

Saying someone has been "shut down" with six days remaining in the season might sound like overkill, but news like that does affect owners trying to maneuver for a title in daily leagues. Padres SP Tyson Ross won't pitch again this week because of a forearm strain, and that's a much bigger deal than you'd have thought six months ago. Ross is the No. 13 starting pitcher in FOXSports.com fantasy scoring, ranking 13th in strikeouts (195), 15th in ERA (2.81), T-29 in wins (13) and 36th in WHIP (1.21). That's not bad for a guy who went undrafted in a lot of leagues, and he should be a top-20 starter in 2015 drafts.
Monday's studs & duds
Stud: Yankees SP Michael Pineda allowed one hit in 7 1/3 scoreless innings against the Orioles, and struck out eight batters.
Stud: Adam Wainwright was almost as good for the Cardinals, whiffing eight batters on three hits in seven scoreless innings versus the Cubs.
Stud: Derek Jeter knocked in three runs against the O's, and since this is probably the last chance I have to put him here, I'm doing it. Consider it a lifetime achievement award.
Dud: Mariners SP James Paxton allowed eight runs to the Blue Jays on seven hits and six walks. Ouch.
News & notes
Braves OF Jason Heyward (thumb) missed his fourth straight game Monday against the Pirates. Heyward's return is still TBD, and might not happen at all.
Angels SP Matt Shoemaker (oblique) played catch on Monday, but the chances of him starting before the end of the regular season are "very remote," according to manager Mike Scioscia.
In other Angels' news, 2B Howie Kendrick missed Monday's game with a tight hamstring, but it doesn't sound serious. OF Josh Hamilton (shoulder) won't play until this weekend at the earliest.
Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka is tentatively scheduled to start again Saturday at Boston.
The Mariners' rotation is a mess, with Roenis Elias (elbow) done for the season, and Chris Young losing his spot. They can let Felix Hernandez pitch every other day for a few weeks, right?
D-backs 2B Aaron Hill is day to day after dislocating the tip of his right pinkie.
Jared Burton will remain the Twins' closer, at least through this week's series against the D-backs.
Alex Avila returned to the Tigers' lineup Monday after missing a week with a concussion.

Derek Holland pitched pretty well (again) on Monday, so we're up to 101-59 for the season. Today's pick is San Diego southpaw Robbie Erlin (owned in 0.6 percent of FOXSports.com leagues) at home against the Rockies, and Wednesday's selection is Astros SP Scott Feldman (4.4 percent owned) at Texas. Feldman doesn't strike out a lot of batters, but he's given up a total of five runs over his last four starts, with 18 whiffs against three walks in 31 1/3 innings.
See you back here tomorrow morning.
