Ohio State's Bosa earns AP All-America honors

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Joey Bosa was named a first-team All-American by the Associated Press Tuesday, an honor that moves the standout sophomore defensive end closer to attaining consensus All-America status after previously receiving first-team honors by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.
Consensus All-Americans are those individuals named first-team All-America by at least three of these five organizations: Associated Press, Walter Camp Football Foundation, Football Writers Association of America, American Football Coaches Association and The Sporting News.
Ohio State is tied for the most consensus All-Americans in the Big Ten with 78, with CB Malcolm Jenkins the most recent honoree in 2008. LB A.J. Hawk (2004 and 2005), LB James Laurinaitis (2006, 2007 and 2008), DL Quinn Pitcock (2006) and QB Troy Smith (2006) are some of Ohio State's most recent consensus All-Americans.
Barrett & Bennett honored
Red-shirt freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett and senior defensive tackle Michael Bennett were each named third-team Associated Press All-Americans. Barrett set or tied 17 Ohio State or Big Ten Conference records before getting injured in the regular season finale vs. Michigan, including a Big Ten record with 45 touchdowns responsible for and school records for total offense (3,772 yards) and touchdown passes (34). He was named the Big Ten's quarterback of the year and its freshman of the year.
Bennett, previously named a first-team All-America by CBSSports.com, capped a fine 36-tackle, 12.5-tackle-for-loss season by setting Big Ten championship game records for TFLs (four) and forced fumbles (two) vs. Wisconsin.
Bosa, who was a finalist for three major awards this season -- the Lombardi, the Bednarik and the Ted Hendricks, recorded 50 tackles on the year including Big Ten-leading numbers in TFLs (20 for -114 yards in losses) and quarterback sacks (13.5 for 96 yards in losses). He ranks fifth nationally in sacks and 11th in TFLs.
A true sophomore from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Bosa is just one sack away from owning the Ohio State single season record (Vernon Gholston, 14 in 2007) and he is tied for fourth in school history in TFLs, with Mike Vrabel (26.0 in 1995), Andy Katzenmoyer (23 in 1996) and Ryan Shazier (22.5 in 2013) the only players in front of him.
Bosa and the Buckeyes resume practice today for their College Football Playoff semifinal game against Alabama at the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1 (8:30 EST kick).
