Ohio State Student-Athletes to receive degrees Sunday

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Sunday, 47 current and former Buckeye student-athletes will officially receive their degrees from The Ohio State University. Autumn Commencement ceremonies will be held at 2 p.m. in the Jerome Schottenstein Center. The list of graduates includes conference players of the year, league champions, All-Americans and academic standouts.
A total of 10 football players, including eight current members of the 2014 Big Ten championship team, are graduating. Braxton Miller, who enrolled in classes in January of 2011, will receive his degree in communications. Miller, a two-time Big Ten Conference Most Valuable Player, Quarterback of the Year and Silver Football award winner, missed the entire 2014 season after re-injuring his shoulder in practice this past August.
Tim Phillips was an All-American swimmer during his time at Ohio State. Most recently, he set a Big Ten record with a time of 45.10 in the 100 butterfly at the 2014 NCAA Championships to place third. A native of Vienna, W. Va., Phillips currently holds Ohio State school record times in the 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle relay, 400 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay. The Buckeye standout is also a member of the United States National Team and is scheduled to compete at the 2015 FINA World Championships, July 24-Aug. 9 in Kazan, Russia.
Women's track standouts Alexis Thomas, from Huber Heights, Ohio, and Ashlee Abraham, a native of Detroit, are both Big Ten champions. Thomas, who claimed three All-America nods, won two conference titles in the hammer throw and was the 2012 Big Ten Athlete of the Year, as well as a three-time All-Big Ten choice. Abraham won three Big Ten titles (60m, 100m, 4x100 m relay) and was a five-time Second Team All-American, 2014 First Team All-American and three-time All-Big Ten selection.
Tim Wetzel, a native of Mayfield, Ohio, was a four-year starter for the baseball Buckeyes. The outfielder started 204 career games, tallying 21 doubles, four triples and five home runs. The three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection scored 103 runs and drove in 84 to go along with 30 stolen bases in his career. This past fall, Wetzel was named one of 29 recipients of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and plans to start medical school next August.
