Ohio State-Michigan weekend kicks off Friday night on the ice

By now you probably know Ohio State and Michigan are set to play for the 110th time on the football field Saturday, but did you know the rivalry weekend will kick off with a little history Friday night?

That is when Big Ten ice hockey will be played for the first time, and the conference appropriately picked the Buckeyes and Wolverines to face each other in their respective first games as Big Ten clubs.

As members of the now-defunct Central Collegiate Hockey Association, Ohio State and Michigan have met many times before (116, to be exact), but this one figures to have a little bit different feel in Ann Arbor.

“The guys realize it’s a big deal, but I don’t know if they really realize it until we step into it and really get that feel of the other five teams we’re going to be playing every weekend,” Ohio State coach Steve Rohlik said of the game that will be broadcast by the Big Ten Network at 7 tonight following the Buckeyes' basketball game against North Florida.

Game two of the series is set for Monday night back in Columbus and can be seen on SportsTime Ohio and Fox Sports Detroit.
