SYDNEY (AP) Australia's National Rugby League has agreed to a five-year broadcasting rights deal worth $1.8 billion, a 70 percent increase on the current agreement.

Rugby League Commission chairman John Grant announced the agreement Friday at the end of what were described as ''marathon'' negotiations over the past few days between the NRL and the Nine Network, Fox Sports and Telstra. The final rights, which apply from 2018 to 2022, will be worth more than $1.9 billion when radio and international rights are included.

Under the agreement matches will be played five days a week from Thursday to Monday and will be screened on both free-to-air, cable and digital platforms.
