Notes: McCann wins catchers' olympics

LAKELAND, Fla. -- In addition to their usual activities Sunday, the Tigers also held a new competition -- the catchers' olympics.

The winner was James McCann, who fittingly was wearing a Captain America shirt under his gear.

"First we blocked off a machine that was throwing right-handed sliders, there was a line we had to keep it in front of," McCann said. "Then we threw to bases, they had physioballs set up on buckets so throw to third, throw to second, throw to first, you had to hit the ball to get any points. Five pop-ups in a row, then the last one we set all our gear up at second base area, we had to sprint from the foul line to our gear, put our gear on and sprint back."

The victory maybe took a little of the sting of defeat away after McCann's Arkansas Razorbacks lost to the Kentucky Wildcats, 84-67, on Saturday.

McCann had posted a photo on Twitter of himself in an Arkansas shirt and his wife, Jessica, in a Kentucky shirt.

Via his Twitter account, @JamesMcCann34, he said, "#HouseDivided #ARKvsUK #SECshowdown @Jessica_McCann3."

"My wife is from Kentucky so she's a big Blue Nation fan," McCann said. "I think she was pretty happy last night. She said she wasn't going to talk to me if Arkansas won."

Arkansas was ranked No. 18 but Kentucky is No. 1.

"I had a little bit of hope," McCann said. "Obviously, nothing was going in our favor. We were playing at Rupp Arena, the No. 1 team in the country, undefeated. They're a really good program. But Arkansas did beat them twice last year and Arkansas is on the rise as a program so I'd like to see a rematch. I don't know that Arkansas wins but I think there's a chance for a much better game."

TIGERS AGREE TO TERMS WITH SIX PLAYERS

The Tigers now have all 40 players on the 40-man roster under contract for the 2015 season.

The final six agreed to terms on Sunday.

Those players are left-handed pitcher Kyle Lobstein, catcher Bryan Holaday, infielders Hernan Perez and Andrew Romine and outfielders Tyler Collins and Anthony Gose.
