Not so fast: Darvish's return uncertain

Published Aug. 20, 2014 6:16 a.m. ET

When Rangers SP Yu Darvish was placed on the DL last week, the team sounded pretty sure that he'd come back on August 25, when eligible. Now, they're not nearly as sure when their ace will return.

Manager Ron Washington said Tuesday that he's "not really thinking about the 25th" for Darvish, who hasn't thrown since August 9. Washington added: "I don't know what is going to happen. We'll just have to wait and see."

On Monday, GM Jon Daniels said that the team would re-evaluate Darvish after the initial two weeks on the DL, and said "I really don't know" when asked on a Dallas radio show if Darvish would pitch again this season. Amid all this gloomy talk, it's important to note that Darvish hasn't had any setbacks in his recovery, because he hasn't done anything yet. But, with the team out of contention, don't look for them to take any chances with Darvish. Stay tuned.

Tuesday's studs & duds

Stud: Dodgers OF Carl Crawford had three hits, three runs scored, three RBI, a homer and a steal against the Padres. That's a nice day at the fantasy baseball office.

Stud: Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma dominated the Phillies, throwing eight shutout innings while allowing four baserunners and striking out 11.

Dud: Seven earned runs and 13 baserunners in four innings, Francisco Liriano? Come on, man.

News & notes

Dodgers SP Zack Greinke might miss his scheduled Thursday start due to a sore elbow. We should know more today about his status.

Reds' closer Aroldis Chapman is day to day with a sore shoulder, but it doesn't sound too bad.

Tigers SP Justin Verlander (shoulder) is hoping to come off the DL for a Saturday start, but we won't know for sure until he throws a Thursday bullpen session.

Rangers OF Alex Rios was scratched Tuesday due to a bruised right thumb. His return is TBD.

Look for Andrew Cashner (shoulder) to come off the DL to start for the Padres on Saturday or Sunday.

Josh Hamilton was hitless in his return to the Angels' lineup. He's now batting .122 with 18 strikeouts in his last 11 games. If you haven't waived Hamilton yet, you have my permission to do so.

Mike Fiers ... still awesome. The Brewers might have a tough rotation decision to make soon, with Kyle Lohse scheduled to come off the DL next week, and Matt Garza targeting an early September return.

Royals C Salvador Perez was back in the lineup on Tuesday after leaving Monday's game with a sore knee.

The Orioles are putting Miguel Gonzalez back in their rotation, and sending Ubaldo Jimenez to the bullpen. They didn't say if it was the Double-A bullpen, where fewer people would see all his walks.

Braves SS Andrelton Simmons left Tuesday's game with a sore hip, and his status for tonight is uncertain.

Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez had knee surgery on Monday, and might not be ready for the start of spring training. Teammate Michael Cuddyer sat out Tuesday due to hamstring soreness, but could be back today.

After homering last night, Twins OF Oswaldo Arcia has gone deep five times in his last seven games, and is up to 13 home runs in 252 at bats. He's owned in 1.5 percent of FOXSports.com leagues. Just saying ...

Jarred Cosart was decent enough on Tuesday, so we're up to 77-49 for the season. Today's pick is Miami's Nate Eovaldi (owned in 17.8 percent of FOXSports.com leagues) versus the Rangers, while Thursday's selection is Brandon McCarthy (31.2 percent owned) against the Astros.

See you back here tomorrow morning.
