Not bad, for starters: Cavs show what's new may also be pretty good

CLEVELAND -- Just when everything seemed like it would go as everyone said it would, the Cavaliers became the team their fans hoped they could.

Just when the defending Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics looked like they might be on their way to another mercy-rule rout in Cleveland, the team with no true superstar proved one man does not make a franchise.

And just when you thought it might not be a bad idea to begin searching for another form of wintertime entertainment in Cleveland, the new Cavs started to play like the old Cavs. Only better. Only scrappier. Only the outcome was unexpected.

Final score: Cavs 95, Celtics 87 in front of a sellout crowd of 20,562 at Quicken Loans Arena.

It was just one game, yet there was so very much to see.

You can start with J.J. Hickson, the young power forward who was publicly chastised by his demanding new coach just one week ago. Hickson took the reprimand like a man, coming out and immediately abusing Celtics star Kevin Garnett on his way to 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting.
