TEMPE, Ariz. â The 18th-ranked Arizona State University baseball team dropped its first night game of the season, 7-1, to New Mexico on Tuesday in front of 2,575 fans at Packard Stadium.
Sophomore first baseman David Graybill drove in the Sun Devilsâ (2-2) only run of the game with a solo home run in the fourth inning, and junior shortstop Drew Stankiewicz and sophomore catcher RJ Ybarra each tallied a pair of hits.
A pair of freshmen relievers, right-hander Eder Erives and left-hander Nick Diamond, combined to hold the Lobos (2-2) to just three base runners over the final four 1/3 innings. Erives struck out the only batter he faced in the fifth to end the inning, and gave up just one hit and struck out a pair in 1 1/3 innings. Diamond took the mound in the seventh and allowed just one base runner and struck out three over the final three innings.
ASU starting junior right-hander Darin Gillies (0-1) took the loss after he allowed six runs on nine hits and three walks, and struck out five, in 4 1/3 innings.
The Lobos struck first with an RBI groundout in the top of the third and extended their lead, 2-0, in the following inning on an RBI single.
Graybill brought the Devils within one, 2-1, with a two-out solo home run to left field in the bottom of the fourth frame. It was Graybillâs first career home run and his third RBI of the season, just four shy of his season total in 2013.
New Mexico scored five runs on seven singles in the top of the fifth to bolster its advantage, 7-1. Gillies surrendered three singles and a run, and was lifted with the bases loaded and one out in the frame. He was replaced by junior right-hander Mark Lambson, who conceded three singles to clear the bases in his first appearance of the season.
Lobos right-hander Jonathan Cuellar (1-0) scattered two hits across three scoreless innings to earn the win.
