NMSU women dominate San Jose St.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- The New Mexico State women's basketball team dominated San Jose State on Thursday, cruising to a 54-29 victory.

Tabytha Wampler posted her sixth double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds. It marked her first in conference play this year and the eighth of her career. Senior guard Danisha Corbett also posted double-digit points with 15, including 12 after the break.

The visiting Spartans struggled all night on offense, posting just nine first-half points. San Jose State did not score in the first seven minutes of the first half and did not put up any points through four minutes to begin the second half.

NMSU sprinted out to an early 8-0 lead behind six points from Wampler and never looked back, leading by as many as 29.

The Aggies held SJSU to just 17 percent from the floor while shooting 32 percent on the hardwood. NM State won the battle of the boards 52-36 and forced 17 Spartan turnovers while committing just 13.

The Aggies' win was their eighth straight in the series and completed their fourth consecutive season sweep of the Spartans.

With the win, NMSU improved to 11-14 overall and 5-6 in the Western Athletic Conference. San Jose State dropped to 2-22 overall and 2-9 in the WAC.

Wampler sparked the Aggies early. After winning the opening tip, she scored six of the Aggies' first eight points of the game.

The Spartans finally got on the board at the 6:56 mark with a driving layup by senior guard Sayja Sumler, but they struggled on offense throughout the opening 20 minutes as NMSU continued to build its lead.

San Jose got five first-half points from Sumler, and the only other player to score was Sara Plavljanin with four.

All 12 NMSU players on the roster made an appearance before the half.

Wampler posted 10 first-half points to lead all scorers. Senior guard Madison Spence added six for the Aggies before the break.

NMSU shot just 27 percent in the first half but held the Spartans to 17 percent. The Aggies also led on the glass 26-19 and forced 12 turnovers while coughing up just six.

The second half began the same way the first, as Wampler scored the first points just 50 seconds in on a dish from Spence in the lane.

San Jose State continued its offensive struggles, finally getting on the board at the 16-minute mark of the half.

The Aggies built their lead to 29 at 40-11 with 14 minutes remaining. Senior guard Danisha Corbett led the offense after the break with 12 points after intermission.

Sumler and A.J. Newton led San Jose State for the game with nine points apiece. Brittany Johnson led the Spartans on the boards with seven.
