ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Kevin Butler scored 18 points and Drew Charles added 12 to lead Texas-Arlington to a 68-47 victory against New Mexico State on Saturday night.

Brandon Edwards had 11 rebounds and Jordan Reves five blocked shots for the Mavericks (6-3, 1-0 WAC), who were victorious in their first and last WAC opener. UT-Arlington, after arriving from the Southland Conference, departs for the Sun Belt in 2013.

A 17-5 run over an 8:32 stretch in the second half gave the Mavericks permanent control. Edwards had six points during the surge, which culminated on Karol Gruszecki's 3-pointer that gave UT-Arlington a 54-32 cushion with 10:33 remaining.

New Mexico State leads the all-time series 10-2, but the Mavericks have won the last two meetings.
