NFL looking to increase price of Super Bowl tickets ... by a lot

By Andy Nesbitt, FOXSports.com Want to go to the Super Bowl this year at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium? Well, get ready to spend a lot of money for tickets to the game. And we're not talking about the tickets available through brokers. Nope, we're talking about tickets sold by the NFL for face value. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the league is close to approving a deal that will significantly raise ticket prices:
According to three league officials familiar with the plan, club-level seats in the mezzanine with access to indoor restaurants are likely to cost about $2,600—a mammoth hike from last year's game in New Orleans, where the top tickets went for $1,250.
That's good chunk of change, to say the least. But maybe you're not interested in the club-level seats and don't really need or want access to the indoor restaurants. Well if you want to sit in the lower bowl of the MetLife Stadium those tickets would now cost $1,500, up from the $950 price tag for lower bowl seats last year in New Orleans. Why such a jump in prices? A league spokesman explained to the Wall Street Journal:
In a statement to the Journal, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league is considering the plan because it is interested in capturing some of the value it has been yielding to fans and brokers who resell their tickets at a markup. "We are looking to close the gap between the face value of the ticket and the true value of a ticket to what has become the premier sports and entertainment event," he said
Owners are expected to approve the plan later this week, according to the Wall Street Journal. How much were tickets to the first Super Bowl in 1967? $6. Questions? Comments? Send them to lacesoutmail@gmail.com and we might respond in our weekly mailbag!
