The season might be on hold for the nation's leading scorer.
Lehigh guard C.J. McCollum left his team's game at VCU on Saturday with an apparent foot injury in the first half. At one point, TV cameras caught a tearful McCollum telling someone on the bench that he thought he'd broken his foot.
Lehigh coach Brett Reed said after the game "there may be a break" but didn't want to say more until McCollum has the foot examined.
A Canton, Ohio, native who gained national prominence when Lehigh upset Duke in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season, McCollum entered the weekend averaging 25.7 points per game in his senior season. He flirted with the NBA Draft after last season but decided to return to school and is generally considered a first-round prospect in June.
Now, it's unclear if he'll play another college game. McCollum was on crutches when returning to the floor after halftime and when leaving the floor after the game. He finished with 4 points.
A first-team preseason All-American and Wooden Award candidate, McCollum has upped his scoring average in each of his three seasons at Lehigh, going from 19.1 points per game as a freshman to 21.8 as a sophomore and 21.9 last year. He scored 30 points in 15th seeded Lehigh's upset over Duke last March.
VCU held on to win Saturday's game, 59-55.
