Mullings scores 26 as NMSU handles rival UTEP

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) -- Daniel Mullings scored 26 points to lead New Mexico State past Interstate 10 rival UTEP 86-73 on Friday night.

Mullings was 9 for 14 from the field and made eight of his 13 free throws for New Mexico State (3-1). Sim Bhullar had 11 points for the Aggies, and Tshilidzi Nephawe added nine and grabbed 12 boards.

UTEP (1-1) was paced by Vince Hunter with 16 points, eight coming from the free-throw line. Julian Washburn added 15 points for the Miners and McKenzie Moore had 12. UTEP was outrebounded 37-23 and shot 13 fewer free throws, with NMSU having a 47-34 advantage.

The game was the 205th matchup between the two schools, with New Mexico State ahead in the series 105-100. The teams first met in 1915 in a game the Aggies won 32-28. NMSU is now 55-42 when playing UTEP on its home court.
