EAST LANSING, Mich. -- It was a day of mixed emotions for the Spartans football program.

On the same day that former Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins made an appearance on the "Dan Patrick Show" to discuss his NFL draft status, the presumed starter for the Spartans this season, Andrew Maxwell, has suffered a slight setback.

The 6-foot-3, 212-pound redshirt junior "suffered a sprained knee in the first spring scrimmage" and "will be be sidelined for at least a week", according to the Michigan State athletic department.

The injury to his right knee will not require surgery, and Maxwell is officially listed as questionable for the annual spring game on April 28.

If Maxwell can't go then the spring game quarterbacking responsibilities will fall upon Connor Cook, a redshirt freshman, who is currently listed as second on the depth chart.

Over the past two seasons, Maxwell has played in nine games, completing 29 of 51 passes for 294 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions.
