Moreno named LA Sports Executive of the Year

LOS ANGELES – Angels owner Arte Moreno, who shocked the baseball world this off-season by signing star players Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson to long-term free agent contracts on the same day, will be presented the prestigious 2011 Sports Executive of the Year award during the seventh annual LA Sports Awards, presented by AT&T U-verse on March 15 at Club Nokia at L.A. Live.
The LA Sports Awards are presented by the Los Angeles Sports Council to celebrate the greatest moments of the year in sports in the Los Angeles/Orange County area.
Ever since he purchased the Angels from The Walt Disney Co. in 2003, Moreno has ingratiated himself with Southern California baseball fans, fast becoming one of the most influential and respected owners in professional sports. In December, he landed the two top prized free agents on the market, signing a 10-year deal with first baseman Pujols for the second-biggest contract in baseball history and a five-year deal with starting pitcher Wilson. Pujols is considered among the all-time greatest players while Wilson is one of the game’s top current left-handed pitchers.
Moreno also won the executive award in 2005.
The awards show will be televised by FOX Sports West (air dates TBA) and will include special appearances by many of the athletes and coaches whose achievements helped make 2011 such a memorable year in sports.
In addition to the Sports Executive award, the ceremony also will feature a countdown of the Top 10 moments for 2011, along with the naming of the Sportsman, Sportswoman, and Coach of the Year.
