MLS Roundup: McInerney leads Impact over Houston, Seattle soars in D.C.
D.C. United 0 – Seattle 1
The visitors claimed the points in this battle of conference leaders through a Chad Barrett goal six minutes before halftime. Gonzalo Pineda collected a second ball after United cleared a corner kick and served a tempting cross toward the penalty spot. Barrett rose highest and turned home his fourth goal of the season to give Sounders FC a ninth league win in 11 attempts.
San Jose 0 – LA Galaxy 1
Gyasi Zardes scored just after the hour to give the Galaxy all three points in the latest edition of the California Clasico. The winner came from an extended spell in possession punctuated by a Robbie Keane ball over the top, a Marcelo Sarvas lay off and a Zardes finish. San Jose pushed for an equalizer in the late stages, but the Earthquakes could not send the bumper crowd at Stanford Stadium home happy.
New England 1 – Philadelphia 3
Sebastien Le Toux struck twice as the Union opened Jim Curtin’s interim reign with a victory. Le Toux snatched his first by poking home from José Gonçalves’ backwards header toward Revs goalkeeper Brad Knighton. Danny Cruz lashed home the second from distance, but Saër Sène finished off a Kelyn Rowe feed to throw the home side a lifeline. Le Toux grabbed his second to dash those hopes and deliver the points for the visitors.
Colorado 2 – Vancouver 0
The home side consolidated its perch in the Western Conference playoff places with a straightforward victory at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Dillon Powers tucked inside the far post to hand the Rapids the lead after 20 minutes. Vicente Sánchez doubled the advantage from the spot nine minutes before halftime. Colorado saw out the game in the second half to secure the points.
Chivas USA 1 – Real Salt Lake 0
Erick Torres scored a sensational volley to defeat 10-man RSL at the StubHub Center. Luke Mulholland made the night difficult for the visitors when his high, studs-up challenge on Martin Rivero procured a red card inside the first 10 minutes. Torres eventually punished RSL by thumping home Tony Lochhead’s service in the 35th minute. RSL pressed for an equalizer, but Chivas USA held firm to allow Dan Kennedy to collect his first shutout of the season.
New York 2 – Toronto FC 2
Bradley Wright-Phillips popped up at the back post to stab home Tim Cahill’s flick to lift the Red Bulls to a share of the spoils in Harrison. Toronto FC looked on course for all three points after Jermain Defoe and Gilberto (his first MLS goal) pegged back Peguy Luyindula’s first-half strike, but Wright-Phillips pounced in second-half stoppage time to claim a point.
Portland 0 – Sporting Kansas City 1
Sporting returned to the top of the Eastern Conference with a dogged victory at Providence Park. Lawrence Olum separated the sides with his first half strike. Portland searched for an equalizer, but the Timbers instead slumped to a
Columbus 0 – FC Dallas 0
This rescheduled affair ended scoreless at Crew Stadium. Both teams struggled to create chances on the afternoon, though Tesho Akindele hit the post for FC Dallas. Jairo Arrieta and David Texiera also squandered opportunities to snatch the points in the late stages.
Inclement weather – and a serious health issue related to lightning in the area – forced the postponement of the match from Saturday night until Sunday afternoon.
Montréal 3 – Houston 0
Jack McInerney scored twice to hand the Dynamo its fifth multi-goal defeat in succession. McInerney opened the scoring four minutes before halftime. He then doubled his haul in the 75th minute with an audacious and seemingly unintentional clip past Tally Hall. Marco Di Vaio completed the rout four minutes later at Stade Saputo.
