MLS Roundup: LA Galaxy, Philadelphia light up scoreboard in midweek action
LA Galaxy 5 -- New England 1
Robbie Keane and Gyasi Zardes each scored twice to extend the Galaxy's unbeaten run to eight matches. Keane curled home a sumptuous opener and then prompted Zardes for the second inside the first 18 minutes. A.J. Soares collected the first red card of the night for his tackle on Juninho, but Dan Gargan threw the Revs a lifeline when he denied Teal Bunbury's goalscoring opportunity and presented Lee Nguyen with the chance to drag a goal back from the start. Keane ensured the 10-versus-10 battle tipped in the Galaxy's favor by feeding Zardes' clever diagonal for the killer third early in the second half. Stefan Ishizaki grabbed the fourth from a deflected free kick before Keane capped the night with his second and the Galaxy's fifth inside the final quarter of an hour.
Philadelphia 3 -- New York 1
The home side snapped its seven-match winless streak at PPL Park with a victory over the Red Bulls. Conor Casey took a couple of clever touches before depositing the opener. Fred -- a first-half replacement for the injured Cristian Maidana – doubled the advantage six minutes after the interval. Bradley Wright-Phillips benefited from more clever work by Thierry Henry to claim his 16th goal of the season on the hour, but Sebastien Le Toux sealed the points from the penalty spot nine minutes later to end the Union's home struggles.
Columbus 1 -- Sporting Kansas City 2
Benny Feilhaber smashed home off the underside of the bar in second-half stoppage time to lift Sporting to a fourth consecutive away victory. C.J. Sapong handed the visitors the lead with his header before halftime, but a controversial red card to Aurelien Collin for elbowing Adam Bedell reduced them to 10 men early in the second half. Igor Juliao turned into his own net to restore parity after 69 minutes. Crew midfielder Wil Trapp procured a second bookable offense to reduce his side to 10 men in the waning stages. It proved a fateful turn as Sporting engineered a sweeping move capped off by Feilhaber's stunning winner to claim the points.
Toronto FC 1 -- Vancouver 1
The two Canadian sides settled for a share of the spoils at BMO Field. Darren Mattocks opened the scoring for the Whitecaps when he diverted Russell Teibert's cross into the net five minutes into the second half. Jermain Defoe responded from the spot after Nigel Reo-Coker fouled Jackson inside the penalty area. The two sides searched for a winner before ultimately taking a point from the affair.
