MLS Roundup: Barrett fires Sounders to victory in Vancouver

Vancouver Whitecaps 0 -- Seattle Sounders 2

Seattle claimed its first win at B.C. Place after a ruthlessly professional display against the Whitecaps. Chad Barrett -- inserted into the lineup in place of the injured Obafemi Martins -- served as the hero by scoring both goals for the visitors. Seattle’s organized defensive performance restricted the Whitecaps’ ability to break quickly or provide passing lanes for Pedro Morales in dangerous areas. The result moved Seattle within two points of first-place FC Dallas in the race for top spot in the Western Conference.

New England Revolution 1 -- Toronto FC 1

TFC improved after the interval and received a stunning equalizer from Michael Bradley to grab a share of the spoils at Gillette Stadium. New England grabbed the lead after 32 minutes when Juan Agudelo cut across his marker and nodded home London Woodberry’s cross. Michael Bradley issued a stunning riposte eight minutes after the interval to give the Reds the platform required to secure a point. The result extended the Revs’ unbeaten run to nine matches.

Houston Dynamo 3 -- Portland Timbers 1

Giles Barnes and Will Bruin combined to dispatch the Timbers at BBVA Compass Stadium. Bruin ghosted free at the back post and headed home the opener inside the first 15 minutes. Fanendo Adi drew the Timbers level three minutes into the second half, but the Dynamo struck twice in the final quarter of an hour to settle matters. Barnes benefited from some clever work by Alexander Lopez to pounce for the eventual winner before Bruin snatched his second in the late stages to guarantee a second consecutive victory.

Montréal Impact 4 -- Real Salt Lake 1

Andrés Romero scored twice to propel the Impact to their first MLS win of the season at Stade Saputo. Montréal swarmed the out-of-sorts visitors from the outset and took firm control of the proceedings inside the opening half-hour. Laurent Ciman opened the scoring by turning home a corner kick after 18 minutes. Romero then pounced twice in the next 11 minutes to essentially place the result beyond doubt. RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando Thwarted an Ignacio Piatti penalty shortly before the break to prevent further damage. Devon Sandoval pulled a goal back with a sublime chip, but Dilly Duka struck inside the final quarter of an hour to punctuate an impressive Montréal display.

San Jose Earthquakes 2 -- Columbus Crew 0

The home side eased to victory against 10-man Crew SC with a pair of second-half goals at Ayava Stadium. Mohammed Saeid placed the visitors in peril when he procured a pair of bookings and received a red card inside the first 33 minutes. Wondolowski broke through with a piece of clever movement and a tidy header at the near post early in the second half. Shea Salinas snatched the second goal on the hour to extend the Earthquakes’ unbeaten run to four games.

Sporting Kansas City -- Colorado Rapids -- postponed

Inclement weather in the metropolitan Kansas City area allowed MLS to use its updated policy on match postponements. The two teams waited for an hour-and-a-half for the lightning and the tornado warnings to pass, but they eventually packed it in for the night. The new date and time for the match will be announced at a later date.
