Miska shines in overtime, leads UMD past Ohio State

Just a day after being named a finalist for the Mike Richter Award as the nation’s top goaltender, Bulldogs freshman Hunter Miska added to his resume with a heroic effort in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Miska made 40 saves in the semifinals of the West Regional, leading the University of Minnesota Duluth men’s hockey team to a 3-2 overtime win over Ohio State at Scheels Arena in Fargo.

Senior defenseman Willie Raskob scored the game-winner at 11:58 of overtime, ripping a blast from the point past Ohio State goalie Matt Tomkins to send UMD to the regional final.

Senior Dominic Toninato scored less than a minute into the game to give UMD a 1-0 lead, before freshman Nick Wolff stretched the lead to 2-0 at 13:41.

The Buckeyes came charging back in the third following a scoreless second period, as junior Matt Joyaux and freshman Gordi Myer scored back-to-back goals just over five minutes apart to force overtime.

The win earns UMD a date with Boston University, who knocked off defending national champions North Dakota in double overtime in the day’s first semifinal.

The winner of Saturday’s regional final with advance to the Frozen Four in Chicago.
