CLEVELAND -- One of the worst kept secrets is now official.
Kyle Shanahan was officially named Browns offensive coordinator. Fox Sports' Alex Marvez reported on Saturday that Shanahan would join the Browns. The team confirmed it Monday in a press release. Shanahan arrived in Berea Monday morning and finalized the details of his contract in the afternoon.
Shanahan, 34, was fired along with his father, Mike, after a 3-13 2013 season. Shanahan has been an offensive coordinator for the past six seasons in the NFL. He had been the Redskins' offensive coordinator since 2010 and prior to that he was the Texans' offensive coordinator in 2008-09. Shanahan's offenses have been among the top 10 in the NFL on four occasions, in terms of yards per game. His best two years were with the Texans in 2008-09 when they finished third and fourth. The Redskins finished fifth in the NFL in 2012 when Robert Griffin III had a breakout rookie season.
Shanahan helped Griffin III set NFL rookie records in passer rating (102.4), lowest percentage of passes had intercepted (1.27) and rushing yards by a rookie quarterback (815) en route to his 2012 Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year recognition.
Last season, Shanahan helped the Redskins offense finish ninth in the NFL in total yards per game (369.7) and fifth in rushing (135.3). Wide receiver Pierre Garcon set a franchise record and led the NFL with 113 receptions. Garcon also finished eighth in the league with 1,346 receiving yards.
One of Shanahan's best games came against the Browns on Dec. 16, 2012 as the Redskins were trying to make the playoffs and Griffin III had suffered a knee injury in weeks previously. Shanahan prepped Griffin III's backup and fellow rookie Kirk Cousins to start his first NFL game against the Browns in Cleveland and he responded with a 26-of-37 for 329-yard performance to help the Redskins continue their march toward making the playoffs. He threw two touchdown passes to Leonard Hankerson and had one pass intercepted in the 38-21 victory. He also rushed three times for 22 yards.
In his first season with the Redskins in 2010, Shanahan's offense set a franchise record in completions (349), and registered the team's third-highest passing yards. In addition, the team recorded a touchdown pass in 15 consecutive games for the first time in club history, and led the NFL with nine completions of at least 50 yards.
Shanahan, reportedly was up for the offensive coordinator positions with the Ravens and the Dolphins but the Ravens hired Gary Kubiak and the Dolphins hired former Eagles quarterback coach Bill Lazor. Shanahan interviewed with the Browns this last Wednesday.
The offensive coordinator was considered a key hire for Mike Pettine's staff as Pettine's entire NFL background has been on the defensive side of the ball. The Browns offensive coordinator is expected to have input in what offense the Browns will run and have say regarding what quarterbacks will direct the team in the future. Shanahan has worked with Matt Schaub when he had his best seasons and Griffin III.
There have been reports that the Browns have hired former Titans' offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains as quarterbacks coach and former Ravens' offensive line coach Andy Moeller as their offensive line coach, but the Browns have not announced those hirings. Besides, Shanahan, the only officially hired assistant coach is tight ends coach Brian Angelichio, who was hired when the first eight coaches were hired.
