Michigan freshman Cutler Martin scored at the 2:16 mark of overtime on Friday night, handing the host Wolverines a 4-3, white-knuckle win over ninth-ranked Minnesota.
With the loss, the Gophers hockey squad fell to 10-6-1 overall and 1-1-1 in Big Ten play.
Minnesota started strong in Friday's series opener at Yost Ice Arena, with Connor Reilly lighting the lamp at 7:03 of the first period for his ninth goal of the season. All told, Minnesota outshot Michigan 16-7 in the game's first 20 minutes.
Later, Gophers standout Travis Boyd broke a 2-all deadlock with just over 9 minutes remaining in regulation, when he tallied his fifth goal of the season. However, Wolverines standout Justin Selman recorded a goal shortly thereafter, sending the game to an extra session, where Michigan's Martin provided the evening's game-winner.
Minnesota was paced by Mike Reilly's two assists. Conversely, Michigan's night was highlighted by netminder Steve Racine's 32 saves.
Minnesota is now 45-66-4 all-time at Michigan.
The Gophers and Wolverines (11-7-0 overall; 3-1-0 Big Ten) return to action Saturday at 3:06 p.m. CST in Ann Arbor, Mich., in a game set to be televised on FOX Sports North PLUS.
