ANN ARBOR -- During their bye week, Michigan's players did the usual things -- they practiced a bit, rested a lot and played some video games.

Oh, and three Wolverines also pulled a man to safety after a car accident.

Offensive tackles Taylor Lewan and Michael Schofield were relaxing with injured quarterback Russell Bellomy when a quiet Wednesday turned a little crazy.

"We were playing Super Smash Bros on the Nintendo 64 -- that's my game -- and the power went out," Lewan said at Monday's news conference. "There was a loud noise, so we went outside and saw there was a power line down, and then we saw a car had hit the pole, so we ran over there."

According to The Michigan Daily, the car , then crossed two lanes of traffic and hit a guard wire ("the kind that stabilizes power lines") and finally plowed into the porch of a neighboring house.

The players discovered that the driver had been knocked unconscious and appeared to be in some danger from the electric wires. Luckily, they weren't the only ones who had rushed to the scene.

"There was another guy there that was retired from the military and who is an athletic trainer, so he knew what to do," Schofield said. "He supervised and we just did what he told us to do."

The players removed the man from the car and moved him carefully to safety, then kept an eye on him until trained people arrived. According to The Michigan Daily, the unidentified driver is a diabetic, which played a role in the accident.

"Once the paramedics got there, they knew what they were doing," Schofield said. "So we left and let them take care of the guy."

Lewan was happy that the players could help, and especially glad that the trainer -- a man he identified as being from Eastern Michigan -- had been there to tell them what to do. He only had one regret about the incident.

"I was winning the game," he said of the interrupted contest. "I was kind of heated about that."
