PHOENIX – The Phoenix Mercury claimed guard Briana Gilbreath off waivers from the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday.

The Mercury waived guard Erin Thorn to make room on the roster.

Gilbreath appeared in 11 games (three starts) for the Mercury in 2012 on a series of three seven-day contracts. The 6-foot guard averaged 7.0 points and 3.6 rebounds.

A Southern California alum, Gilbreath was originally selected in the third round (35th overall) of the 2012 WNBA Draft by the Washington Mystics but was waived prior to the start of the season.

Phoenix's roster, which now includes 13 players, must be at 11 players by Thursday.

The Mercury will open their 2013 season on Monday, when they host the Chicago Sky.
