The 2013 AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball Championships took place in Gulf Shores, Ala., on May 3-5, marking the second-annual occurrence of the event which began in 2012 and continues to grow as participation increases. The number of sand volleyball programs sponsored by colleges around the country doubled from 2012 to 2013, with 29 varsity programs competing this past season.

Mendoza and Samoday were selected to the championship’s ‘Best of the Rest’ field before going a perfect 4-0 in pairs pool play to reach the championship bracket.

The duo first took care of business against Long Beach State’s Chelsea Cabrajac and Delainey Aigner-Swesey, coming away with a thrilling three-set victory. The twosome would then pick up a straight-set win over Florida State’s Jace Pardon and Sarah Wickstrom, before falling to LBSU’s Caitlin Ledoux and Tara Roenicke in the championship semifinals.

Mendoza and Samoday ended the season with an overall pairs record of 22-5, as FIU completed a successful inaugural sand volleyball campaign.
