DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) Offspinner Mehedi Hasan claimed 5-65 as Bangladesh left England struggling at 163-8 at lunch on the second day of the second cricket test on Saturday.

It was Mehedi's second straight five-wicket haul and it took Bangladesh to the verge of a first innings lead, after it was bowled out for 220 in its first innings.

Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid were batting on 12 and 7 runs respectively.

Joe Root battled hard to score 56 runs as Bangladesh's spinners made inroads regularly after England resumed the day on 50-3.

Jonny Baristow made 24 and combined for a 45-run partnership with Root for the seventh wicket after Mehedi and Taijul Islam took two early wickets in the morning session to reduce England to 69-5.

Mehedi broke through and raised the prospect of quickly wrapping up England's innings before Woakes and Rashid came up with some resistance.

Left arm spinner Islam complemented Mehedi's efforts with 2-52.
