Masked Marvel wins St. Leger classic

Masked Marvel moved into the lead with about a quarter-mile to go and won the St. Leger at Doncaster Racecourse in record time.
The win on Saturday gave trainer John Gosden and jockey William Buick back-to-back victories in the fifth and final classic of the British flat-racing season. Last year, Arctic Cosmos won the race.
''Last year was a dream and this is another one,'' Gosden said. ''He was a powerful little guy then and he's got a great pedigree for this job.''
Seville took the early lead, with 15-2 choice Masked Marvel racing comfortably back in the pack before taking charge and beating Brown Panther by three lengths in a record time of 3 minutes, 0.44 seconds.
''To win the oldest Classic with this horse is what we've planned for about two years - sometimes it works,'' Gosden said. ''He's got a high cruising speed and I told William to settle where you're happy and not to attack too soon as there is a strong headwind.''
Bown Panther, with Kieren Fallon aboard, is owned by Manchester United striker Michael Owen.
''I'm very proud of him,'' Owen said. ''I was always confident he would run well as Tom (Dascombe) had him in top form. Kieren said he might have been feeling the ground a bit and he will be a better horse with more juice in the ground. He's a dream horse for me.''
The 2-1 favorite Sea Moon was third.
