JUPITER, Fla. -- Miami Marlins shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria has been nursing a "tired" right shoulder that has kept him out of the lineup since Thursday's Grapefruit League opener.

Manager Mike Redmond said the plan is for Hechavarria to return on Tuesday when the Marlins host the Washington Nationals at Roger Dean Stadium.

No MRI has been performed. Hechavarria has done all baseball activities except throwing. In his lone official spring training appearance, Hechavarria went 0 for 2 with a strikeout. He also played six innings of defense, committing a throwing error in the second. Hechavarria also struck out against the University of Miami in Tuesday's exhibition.

"We're just keeping him back for a couple of days," Redmond said. "We have the time to give him a couple days off to make sure everything's fine. He said he could go out there and play if we need him to. Obviously it's more important to get him 100 percent. We've got plenty of time to get him the at-bats he needs to be ready for Opening Day."

Last season, Hechavarria landed on the 15-day disabled list in late June with a right triceps strain. He has played in 294 games (147 average) over two seasons with the Marlins.

With Hechavarria's absence, Redmond has been able to try various backups. He intends on mixing in a few guys to see who looks comfortable at the position.

Donovan Solano got the start on Sunday, while Miguel Rojas earned the nod on Friday and Saturday. Non-roster invitees Reid Brignac and Don Kelly are other options.

"I think it's important we have somebody that can give Hech a day off," Redmond said. "So when you talk about that versatility we're going to need somebody to be able to play shortstop and give Hech a blow if he needs one at some point."
