Man with Najeh Davenport's ID leads police on car chase in south Florida
Former NFL and University of Miami running back Najeh Davenport has had some run-ins with the law over the years, but, despite initial reports to the contrary, he did not lead police in a car chase through Miami-Dade County on Thursday.
The chase ended outside Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, where the suspect was apprehended after trying to escape into the emergency room. Police initially identified the suspect as Davenport and local TV news outlets ran with it.
However, after a man called Local 10 news claiming to be Davenport and saying the news station had the wrong name, the person was urged to call the authorities. A short while later, the true identity of the man was revealed to be Damian Coleman, who had Davenport's driver's license in his possession.
WSVN 7News said Davenport told them that he had reported his wallet stolen on Wednesday.
Davenport, who played for the Packers, Steelers and Colts during his NFL career, became somewhat infamous in 2002, when he was alleged to have broken into the dorm room of a Barry University woman and defecated in a laundry basket. In a plea bargain, he agreed to 100 hours of community service and never admitted guilt.
In 2007, he was charged with domestic violence in Cleveland. But after a four-day trial in 2008, he was found not guilty.
