Toledo holds on for 73-69 win over C. Michigan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) -- J.D. Weatherspoon and Justin Drummond combined for 32 points as Toledo held on for a 73-69 victory over Central Michigan Tuesday night.

Toledo held a comfortable 69-59 lead with 3:18 remaining following a layup by Drummond, who finished with 15 points. Braylon Rayson and John Simons nailed two straight 3-point jumpers and Chris Fowler made a layup with 55 seconds left as Central Michigan pulled within two, 69-67. Nathan Boothe made two free throws, but Simons answered with a layup with 7 seconds left. Drummond then made two free throws to seal the victory.

Toledo (25-5, 13-4 Mid-American Conference) remains atop the conference's west division, one game ahead of Western Michigan, which it defeated in overtime 96-85 Saturday.

Witherspoon had 17 points and Julius Brown added 12 with four assists for Toledo.

Fowler had 15 points, Austin Stewart added 14 and Rayson had 13 for Central Michigan (10-19, 3-14).

 

 

Diggs leads Akron to an 83-71 victory over Buffalo

AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- Quincy Diggs scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half to keep Akron's hopes of sharing a Mid-American Conference East championship alive by beating Buffalo 83-71 on Tuesday.

Demetrius Treadwell added 17 points for Akron (19-11, 11-6 Mid-American Conference), despite picking up his fourth foul with 8:15 left. Nick Harney added 14.

After Treadwell went to the bench, Harney and Diggs combined to score 12 points to push Akron's lead to 71-58 with 3:16 left.

Joshua Freelove scored 17 points for Buffalo (18-9, 12-5) and made four of the Bulls' seven second-half 3-pointers. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak.

Akron avenged a 96-90 loss at Buffalo on Feb. 19. Ohio beat Bowling Green 72-61 on Tuesday, preventing Akron from locking up a bye (No. 4 seed) in next week's tournament.

 

 

Ohio gets by Bowling Green 72-61

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) -- Nick Kellogg scored 25 points, making 8 of 13 field goal attempts, to lead Ohio to a 72-61 win over Bowling Green Tuesday night.

Ohio held a 33-21 halftime advantage and opened the second half with a 13-8 run to pull ahead 46-29. Bowling Green closed to 65-58 following an Anthony Henderson dunk with 1:27 remaining but Kellogg responded with a three-point play to seal the victory.

Javarez Willis had 16 points, hitting 4 of 5 3-point attempts and Antonio Campbell added 11 points for Ohio (20-10, 10-7 Mid-American Conference).

Ohio shot 57.8 percent from the field, making 26 of 45 attempts. The Bobcats shot 68.4 percent in the second half.

Henderson had 12 points and five steals and Spencer Parker added 11 points for Bowling Green (12-18, 6-11).

Ohio currently holds the No. 5 seed for the conference tournament, one game behind Akron.

 

 

Miami (Ohio) turns away Kent State 73-61

KENT, Ohio (AP) -- Will Felder scored 26 points and Miami (Ohio) used a big first half to take down Kent State 73-61 on Tuesday.

Miami (12-16, 8-9 Mid-American Conference) led 45-25 at half, hitting all seven 3-point attempts and shooting 63 percent from the field. Felder led the RedHawks with 15 first-half points.

Miami led by as many as 24 before Kent State (16-14, 7-10) put together a second-half run. Trailing 57-33, the Golden Flashes used an 18-2 run to come within 59-51. But the RedHawks responded with an 11-4 run to go up 70-55, and held a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Felder's point total tied a career high at Miami. He also pulled down nine rebounds. Willie Moore added 14 points and Will Sullivan had 13.

Devareaux Manley led Kent State with 12 points. K.K. Simmons and Mark Henniger added 11 points apiece.
