ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) Longshot Spirit Rules defeated War Academy by a half-length to win the $60,000 feature for older horses at Santa Anita on Thursday.
Ridden by Iggy Puglisi, Spirit Rules ran six furlongs in 1:08.74 and paid $20.60, $7 and $4.40 at 9-1 odds.
Trained by Bob Baffert, War Academy returned $3.40 and $2.80 in his first start since being eased as the favorite in last year's Arkansas Derby.
Kate's Event was another 3 1/4 lengths back in third and paid $2.80 to show. Heir of Storm finished fifth as the 3-2 favorite.

The victory, worth $46,800, increased Spirit Rules' career earnings to $187,078, with four wins in 11 starts.
