Cornerback Darius Slay, a second-round draft pick from Mississippi State, recently underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and will miss the Detroit Lions' rookie mini-camp this weekend, the club confirmed Tuesday.
The surgery was described as "minor" by the Lions.
Slay had been diagnosed with a torn meniscus before the draft. Some NFL clubs reportedly were concerned that he might not be ready for the start of training camp in late July.
Slay dismissed those reports and said he had been able to workout despite the knee problem.
After taking Slay, Lions general manager Martin Mayhew indicated he wasn't concerned about the severity of the injury, adding that he expected the rookie to be available for these upcoming workouts.
It is the second straight year the Lions drafted a player in the second round with a knee issue. Receiver Ryan Broyles was coming off a more serious surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament a year ago at this time.
