The Detroit Lions confirmed the signing of 6-foot-3, 225-pound safety Taylor Mays on Monday after he passed the team's physical.

Drafted in the second round by the San Francisco 49ers in 2010 coming out of Southern California, Mays will compete for a roster spot as a backup safety with the Lions behind Glover Quin and James Ihedigbo, and as a special-teams contributor.

Mays, 27, spent one year with the 49ers before spending the last four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. He signed this offseason with the Minnesota Vikings, but was released last week.
